Bonjour Mes Chers Amis, your weekly update of all the latest happenings in Paris has arrived.
If you’ve been following the news, you’ve likely seen that much of France is once again in the grip of an early summer heat wave, a.k.a. a canicule. Temperatures are soaring well into the 90s and higher. It’s the perfect excuse to slow down and embrace one of France’s greatest luxuries: living with the rhythm of the season.
Despite the heat, you won’t want to miss Saint-Sulpice Céramique. The beautiful Place Saint-Sulpice is filled with rows of white tents as more than one hundred ceramic artists gather for one of Europe’s most respected ceramics fairs. Whether you’re searching for a unique piece to bring home or simply appreciate exceptional craftsmanship, it’s one of those wonderfully Parisian events that rewards a leisurely browse.
For those dreaming of stepping back into the age of kings and queens, the Grand Masked Ball at Versailles takes place tomorrow evening, June 27. Following the spectacular nighttime fountain show, guests dressed in elaborate period costumes dance beneath the stars until dawn, recreating the splendor and pageantry of the court of Louis XIV. It’s undoubtedly one of the most magical evenings of the Paris summer season.
Longtime followers know I love equestrian events, and this weekend offers the perfect opportunity to see world-class polo in Paris. Sport and elegance come together on Sunday as the Open de Paris Polo Final is played at the Polo de Paris in the Bois de Boulogne. Even if you’ve never attended a polo match, it’s a quintessentially chic Parisian afternoon, combining intense competition with beautiful surroundings and timeless style.
Movie lovers will want to reserve an evening next week for Cinéma Paradiso at the Louvre, returning July 1 through July 4. The museum’s magnificent Cour Carrée is transformed into an open-air cinema where films are shown beneath the stars, creating one of the most memorable summer experiences Paris has to offer.
Fashion lovers will want to head over to the Musée Maillol, where the remarkable Gianni Versace Retrospective continues through September 6. Nearly 450 garments, accessories, sketches, photographs, and archival videos trace the legendary designer’s extraordinary career while highlighting his enduring relationship with Paris. It’s one of this summer’s most anticipated exhibitions and a must for anyone with an appreciation for fashion, design, or creative genius.
#ICYMI
If you missed it this week, I shared How French Women Stay Chic During a Heat Wave where I share the tips and trips for staying cool that I learned from my French girlfriends during on particularly hot road trip.
And finally, a little nostalgia. Five years ago this week, I spent a glorious Week in Provence, wandering lavender fields, exploring hilltop villages, and lingering over leisurely lunches beneath the shade of plane trees. Looking back through those photographs is a gentle reminder that some of the sweetest travel memories come not from grand attractions, but from slowing down enough to savor everyday France.
Whether you’re in Paris or simply dreaming of your next visit, I hope you’ll find a few moments to embrace the slower pace that summer invites. Beat the heat with a scoop (or two) of Berthillon ice cream, enjoy an evening stroll along the Seine where a welcome breeze almost always finds its way through the city, or settle beneath the shade of a leafy park tree with a good book. Sometimes the simplest pleasures are the ones that remind us why we fell in love with France in the first place.
Until next Friday…
À bientôt,
Jeannine
