Bienvenue to the Paris Postcard — your weekly roundup of the latest happenings in Paris. The holiday crowds have gone, cafés feel cozier than ever, and Paris is settling into one of its most intimate seasons — made even more magical this week by the rare snowfall that has blanketed the city and enticed people outdoors. This touch of winter wonder has added a sparkling backdrop to January.
Another enticement: Les Soldes d’Hiver, the annual winter sales. From grand department stores to small boutiques, shops are offering discounts on fashion, home décor, and design treasures. It’s the perfect excuse to browse and pick up a few gems.
If you’re into interior design, Paris Déco Off and Maison & Object kick off on January 14. For four inspiring days, Paris opens its doors to creativity as decorating houses and ateliers welcome visitors into their showrooms across Saint-Germain, Rue du Mail, and Place Saint-Sulpice. It’s a joy to wander freely among textiles, wallpapers, and decorative details — bolts of fabric unfurled, walls dressed in pattern, the latest in fine furniture, and objects of desire — stopping for coffee along the way. Late-night openings add a festive glow to winter evenings.
Across the city, a few noteworthy exhibitions are drawing to a close on January 11. If any are on your list, this is the moment to go:
- Pierre Soulages — Une autre lumière (Musée du Luxembourg): A luminous exploration of the master of black and light.
- John Singer Sargent: Éblouir Paris (Musée d’Orsay): A major retrospective of one of the most celebrated portraitists of his time.
- Paul Troubetzkoy, Sculpteur (Musée d’Orsay): A sculptural study highlighting movement and emotion.
- My Name Is Orson Welles (Cinémathèque française): An archival exhibition at the crossroads of cinema, art, and storytelling.
A quick note if you’re planning museum visits: be sure to book tickets directly through official museum websites, as fake booking platforms do circulate.
And when the cold sets in, there’s nothing better than classic Parisian bistro fare. La Grande Épicerie is celebrating timeless comfort dishes all month long — rich, warming, and deeply satisfying.

Jeanine,
You were kind enough to offer up some suggestions for my “postponed” upcoming trip to Paris for my sister’s 80th birthday. I was so bummed when I had to cancel due to the rains in Southern California. I had two rooms flooded out and now have to do some major repairs to my house. Consequently, thought it best to postpone our trip. Thank you again for all your suggestions and please keep me on your email list.
Deb
Deb,
I am so sorry to hear this sad news. I hope you’re able to reschedule and, ff course, I will keep you on the list.
Best, Jeannine
